Appearing in a 1917 silent film documentary of the Potomac River’s C&O canal, pictured here exiting the mile long, hand dug, canal tunnel at Paw Paw through pure mountain stone. Ashby Gap is developing an overnight Paw Paw trip where guests can explore this man made phenomenon in addition to floating the Paw Paw bends among cliffs and vistas, dramatic enough to prompt canal builders to avoid them and Instead dig through a mountain. The tunnel basically bankrupted the project
